About THE PROJECT
FIGHTING IN SUDAN
- 15 April marks the first anniversary of the destructive civil war in Sudan. On that date one year ago, clashes broke out between two fractions of the military government, Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict rapidly evolved into a civil war encompassing large parts of the country and involving several armed groups allied to either of the two main combatants.
- The war has led to a grave humanitarian crisis, with 6.5 million people internally displaced and two million refugees in neighbouring countries.
- A large part of the population has become dependent on humanitarian aid. The UN is warning of growing malnutrition, and the risk of famine is increasing.
- In some parts of the country, particularly in Darfur, a series of massacres targeting specific ethnic groups has prompted the UN to warn of ethnic cleansing and possible genocide.
- The fighting has caused immense damage to Sudan´s economy, destroying the commercial city centre of Khartoum, disrupting agriculture in rural areas, and damaging communication and infrastructure,

- The project documents in real time the experiences and perspectives of those directly affected by the conflict, providing insights to better understand the impact it is having on individuals and communities in different locations, and serving as a historical record.
- But above all, it provides a platform for people suffering in the conflict to share their stories and have their voices heard. This can be empowering for individuals and can help to raise awareness about the situation in Sudan and the need for humanitarian and political action to address the conflict.
